At 803m high (2634ft) Coniston Old Man lies in the Southern part of the Lake District National Park, with stunning 360′ views to the coast in the South and the higher mountains such as Scafell Pike, Skiddaw and Great Gable to the West and North.
The highest of the Coniston fells, the ‘Old Man’ is a popular route with magnificent scenery and history. Our starting point will be Torver, a small village on the outskirts of Coniston.
Setting off from Torver, we head up the Walna Scar path and up over Brown Pike, Buck Pike and then alongside Dow Crag, drop down Goat’s Hawse and up onto the Old Man of Coniston. From here we’ll drop down through the old quarries and head back along to Torver.

This walk is graded INTERMEDIATE
All our walks are Graded so it makes it easier for you to understand the intensity and level of walking we’ll be doing. Below is a description of each:
For beginners or those that enjoy lower level and shorter walks, an average of 3-4 hours walking per day with plenty of breaks.
These walks are suitable for anyone who has done some walking in the past, or does some form of weekly exercise. Some steeper gradients may be involved but there will be plenty of opportunities to stop for a break. Average of 4 – 6 hours walking per day.
Longer walks/treks with some steep gradients and possibly some scrambling, sometimes at higher altitudes (trekking in Europe or Africa). An average of 6 – 8 hour walking, no technical skill required but a good level of fitness is required.
This is a guideline only, if you are unsure whether you could complete a walk with us or would just like to clarify some information, please feel free to contact us by telephone or email.
